When you first begin to learn how to play pool, you often face a big dilemma between working on perfecting the tools you’ve got, and constantly trying to learn and use more things. In 8 ball, or any other pool games, it can be disastrous to take a new-found tool out of the box during game-night, yet on the same note, your ‘ole reliable tool’ might be getting a bit worn out and in need of a replacement. For some people still at the level of discovering how to play pool for beginners, the change or improvement needed is in their technical fundamentals, others need to diversify their pattern choices, improve their accuracy, or learn to utilize spin differently. Whatever that new tool is, though, it is imperative to become comfortable with it quickly so that it has as little negative impact on your performance as possible.

So how do you balance it all? The first question you need to answer is “How much time can I devote to practicing that change that doesn’t involve using it during game night?” If you want or need to change something in your game desperately then you need to devote a lot of committed practice time to it.

But maybe you don’t have any other time than your league night to get practice in? So the second question you need to ask yourself is “How much do I really need or want to make a change?”

That second question is a real killer. I mean, you are working hard to learn how to play pool. Yet you really don’t want to start doing something new during competition. Any change in your game will affect your consistency.  But, if your only time to practice anything is during league-night, then either you bite the bullet and suffer for a few weeks until you straighten yourself out, or you decide to forgo the change.
