You’ve just begun learning how to play pool, but some things just don’t seem to work out for you. You really wish you could find a few tricks to help you out, some simple playing pool tips you could put into practice right away. I’m here to show you a few things that can make a real difference if you’re a beginner player who wants to play pool great:

  • First stop at the market and pick up a pack of Scotch Pads. Cut them in half or in thirds, and start carrying one or two with you every time you go out to shoot some pool. Use them to scrub off all the junk and stickiness from the house cues you are going to use before you even begin to play. This is going to help tremendously because you’ll eliminate all the friction-burn you normally get from those old sticky cue sticks. You’ll never need a shooting-glove again!
  • Secondly, find yourself a tip-scuffer or tip-tapper for the leather tip of cue sticks. You can find products like this at supply stores, or you could even just get some low-grade sandpaper and glue it to a small piece of plastic or wood. By roughing up the leather tip of whatever stick you are using, you’ll help it hold more chalk. You should know that a smooth and shiny tip can’t hold chalk well, which will make you miscue a lot when you’re trying to shoot. A roughed up tip, though, will hold chalk nicely and allow the tip to ‘grab’ the cue ball easier, making for better, more accurate hits.
  • Finally, work on leveling out your cue stick when you are shooting. A lot of beginners tend to hold the back end of the stick up high at an angle. This makes you shoot down towards the cue ball instead of straight into it. An angled shot makes the cue ball jump and hop and do funny things, and makes it very difficult to make a good shot.
