Welcome to Table Talk Issue 1
Alright, folks. Here’s my first attempt at a regular newsletter. I want to share some ideas with amateur and intermediate players, and start up discussions wherever possible. The comment sections will be open for you all to chime in when you wish.
We’re looking to explore how to get better at pool, specifically how to help the amateurs and intermediates get better at pool. And in order to get the ball rolling right, I want to begin with some positonal-play ideas, and see how they translate to you through my diagrams. If, at any time, you think that I am presenting concepts that are too simple, or too complex, please let me know. My goal is to engage your creativity, and help clarify ideas and strategies and mechanics wherever I can. Which means tailoring this newsletter to your own needs, not mine.
All that being said, let’s begin this week with some simple diagrams. Now, I’m just learning how to use this software, so my diagramming skills are not perfect yet!
The angles bracketing each of the object balls will represent their relative windows of shoot-ability – the area within which you want the cue ball to land in, in order to have a decent shot at that ball. For the sake of this discussion, you can extend the lines off into infinity to show their maximum range upon the pool table.
Visualizing these triangular windows of position is a vital tool for amateur players to develop. Understanding at what angles an object ball can be attacked from is step one in the process.
