How To Rack Pool Balls
Howdy folks, I’m going to list out the most current standard rules for how to rack pool balls for 3 of the more popluar pocket billiard games: 8 ball, 9 ball, and straight pool. These are the rules that should be followed, and if they are not familiar to you, then you should study-up and adopt them for yourself. Most in-house pool leagues will use these rules, as well as tournaments and professional matches.
When racking up for these games, it is vital that you make sure the balls are all touching one another. You do not want gaps between the balls! Gaps will cause the break to react poorly, often preventing the balls from scattering very far. Whenever you find that a break does not scatter the balls, and they just sort of sit clustered in the middle of the table, it is usually due to poor racking that allowed the balls to separate slightly.
“Loose racks” are never appreciated, but I’m not sure if there are any standard rules to enforce a tight rack, because it’s hard to say “yeah, that fellow just gave me a loose rack, that’s why the table looks so crappy!”. Your opponent could just claim that you have a terrible break, and that his racking was just fine. SO, to that end, I DO know that if you wish, you can always check your opponents racking, and if you are unsatisfied with it, you are usually allowed to re-rack everything yourself before you break, leaving you no room for complaints.
Some tips to making a tight rack: press your fingers firmly against the bottom row of balls and release slowly (don’t press TOO TIGHT because that will force the rack to expand oddly, causing the rack to be mis-shaped and probably loose). If the pool balls don’t stay in place after racking because of debris on the table or because there are worn out patches in the pool felt that make it uneven, then you can try to 1) brush it as clean as you can, and then 2) hold the r...
